There is one tortise reserve on San Cristobal. About 50 tortise are here and they have a breeding program as well. 80% of the eggs survive at the reserve whereas only 20% survive outside the reserve. Predation is the problem. Mostly rats introduced by mainlanders and old sailing ships prior to anyone’s understanding of the impact outsiders could have on the islands.
