Caves of Rapa Nui

There are hundreds of natural and man made caves on the island where many people apparently lived and some hid from European slave traders. The island was first discovered by Western man in 1522 on Easter Sunday by the Dutch explorer, Roogaveen. His men ended up killing some locals over some misunderstanding and in future European visits, it is believed many of the people hid in caves to avoid being discovered. This is why Capt. Cook upon his visit in the 1700’s thought that from Roogaveen’s description, the island’s population was decimated. It may have been from ongoing tribal wars as well.
