Fallen Moai

On the tour, we first saw the fallen Moai. Moai are the name of the huge stone statues of Rapa Nui (before they receive their white coral eyes!). After that ceremony in ancient times, they were known by another name which escapes me. Moai (Mo – eye) is the pronounciation and will have to suffice. All the Moai of the island were knocked down during the 1600-1850 period by local tribal wars. Some say the Catholic missionaries may have knocked some down upon their arrival, but this is controversial as is much of what is truly known about “Rapa Nui”.
