This is m/v Speed Bird ( A Nordhaven 54?) owned by Peter and Mary Rose. We met them at Marina Costa Baja and really enjoyed their company. This photo was taken at Isla San Francisco. Speed Bird has been sold and Peter and Mary Rose are building a LARGER Nordhaven…..Nice!…

We had both just “upped anchor” and were heading our separate ways. Speed Bird toward Cabo San Lucas and back to San Diego. We were headed up into “The Sea”…..

We first anchored in “The Elipse” at Puerto Escondido. Cindy is at the dinghy dock.

We all know you think we sit around, dive and drink Margaritas. This was a 110 degree day where Scott had to fix an oil leak on one of the starboard engine alternators that just “fell off”……..Welcome to “boat projects in exotic locations, part infinity!”

We had to get a LOT of boat parts and we heard our friends Clark and Vincent were coming from France to be the first legally wedded gay couple at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego. Cindy said please, and 17 hours and 6 military check points , we were in San Diego….

Part of what we got was 5 new 12 volt batteries. Mick and Terry helped me put them in……..Have a Margarita!

Punta Pulpo (which means “octopus” in Spanish) got it’s tentacles on this unfortunate vessel. We were en route to Isla Ildefanso in search of the elusive Hammer Head sharks. This is where we met our first “Chubasco” and the most northerly extent of our summer in “The Sea”….

On our dives at Isla Ildefanso, we didn’t find any Hammer Head sharks, but Scott found evidence that we weren’t the first divers ever here……Maybe this guy met the Hammer Head sharks?…..:)

As the daytime temperatures averaged OVER 100 degrees daily and the nights rarely below 85 degrees; we put up our windscoop that we got on the San Diego trip to catch any breeze we could.

We were almost directly under Tropical Storm Julio when it passed over Puerto Escondido. We never saw wind over 20 knots, but we got 8 inches of rain in 24 hours. The barometer was watched closely!

Terry told us of the spectacular waterfalls that occured right after Tropical Storms or even Hurricanes passed over Puerto Escondido. There were dozens of these very temporary but spectacular waterfalls on the East face of the Sierra Gigantes which rim Puerto Escondido. Loreto and the local roads were flooded.

We really had a fabulous time following Terry around and diving at least every other day during our 3 months in the Puerto Escondido area. Terry got us all excited about diving with sharks and manta rays at the Revillagigedos (San Benedicto and Socorro Islands). We would head to Mazatlan the next morning and prepare for our trips to Copper Canyon, Cindy’s to visit everyone (and more boat stuff in LA and No. Cal) and prepare for our trip to the Revillagigedos (250 nm SSW of Cabo San Lucas) in December.

A different octopus. When the water was cool in the early summer, we saw lots. After the water got into the 80’s, these guys went deeper for the cooler water.
